Your Home Should Welcome You Back

There is something special about walking through your front door at the end of a long day.

Maybe you’ve spent the day working, taking care of your family, running errands, answering emails, or simply trying to keep up with everything life has placed on your plate. You finally walk inside, put down your bag, take off your shoes, and breathe.

You’re home.

But what makes a house feel like home?

I’ve thought about that question many times.

My own home isn’t necessarily my favorite house. It’s an old house that needed a lot of work, and over the years we’ve made changes to make it feel more like us. But I’ve discovered that it isn’t the walls, the floors, or even the renovations that make me love coming home.  It’s the things I’ve chosen to surround myself with.  The things that make me smile.  The things that hold memories.  The things that feel like me.

At one point, after some renovations, my daughter walked into my home and said something I’ll never forget:

“Mom, you’re the only person I know who could take a cold color like gray and make it feel warm and inviting.”

That compliment stayed with me.  Because I realized she wasn’t really talking about the color gray.  She was talking about the feeling of home.  And I think that’s something many of us understand.  Our homes don’t have to look like the pictures in a magazine. They don’t have to be perfectly decorated or perfectly clean.

They simply need to feel like ours.

Maybe it’s a favorite chair where you sit with your morning coffee.  Maybe it’s photographs of people you love. Maybe it’s a blanket that makes you feel cozy. Maybe it’s fresh flowers on the kitchen table.  Maybe it’s music playing softly while you prepare dinner. Maybe it’s a fragrance that reminds you of a peaceful place or a special memory.

Those little things can change the feeling of a room.

And sometimes, they can change the feeling of us.

Your home doesn’t have to be perfect to welcome you back.

Think about the woman who walks through her front door after a particularly exhausting day.  She doesn’t need another list.  She doesn’t need to walk in and immediately think about everything that needs to be cleaned, organized, or finished.  She needs somewhere to exhale.  That doesn’t mean ignoring the responsibilities of life.  It means creating at least one small place where those responsibilities don’t get to speak so loudly.

  • Perhaps it’s a corner of your bedroom.
  • A chair beside a window.
  • Your favorite spot on the porch.
  • Or even the kitchen table after everyone else has gone to bed.

Give yourself permission to make that space yours.  Put something there that makes you happy.  Bring home flowers.  Place a favorite photograph nearby.  Keep a book within reach.  Make yourself a cup of tea.  Choose a fragrance that makes the room feel warm and inviting.  For us, fragrance is one of those simple touches that can transform the feeling of a room and make coming home feel even more comforting.  It doesn’t have to cost much.  It doesn’t have to take much time.  It simply has to remind you:

This is my home.

This is my place.

And I belong here.

🌿 A Quiet Thought

We spend so much of our lives creating comfortable spaces for other people.  We make sure our children have what they need.  We prepare our homes for our families and guests.  We think about what everyone else will enjoy.  But perhaps it’s time to ask ourselves:

What makes me feel at home?

Not what looks beautiful to someone else.  Not what is currently in style.  Not what we think our home should be.

What makes you walk through the door and think…

I’m home.

Find one thing this week that brings that feeling to you.  And let yourself enjoy it.

You deserve to feel welcomed in your own home.

Until Next Time…

At Just Us Chix, we believe self-care doesn’t always require getting away from our everyday lives.

Sometimes it begins by making the life we’re already living feel a little warmer, a little calmer, and a little more like our own.

Your home doesn’t have to be perfect.

It just needs to welcome you back.

With warmth,

Adele
